Patients will often notice subtle changes in their nails it will often take some time before this develops to the point where a patient will seek advice and treatment for nail fungus. Clinical diagnosis of nail fungus is made by observing the colour and texture of then nail plate sometimes cracked skin will appear around the nail area which is caused by fungus infecting the skin. Cultures can be taken however the results are often non conclusive. A through medical history may be taken to rule out anything else as a possible cause. A trained practitioner in Podiatric Dermatology will be able to make an accurate clinical diagnosis without requiring expensive pathology tests. In some cases we will order pathology to rule out other conditions that may be mistaken as nail fungus.
